Sukhothai: Alms giving, weaving, and doll making at Ban Na Ton Chan

Ban Na Ton Chan Community is located in Ban Tuek Subdistrict, Si Satchanalai District, Sukhothai Province. It is a cultural and eco-tourism destination where visitors can experience and learn about the local way of life through sustainable tourism. The community offers homestay accommodations, allowing guests to stay with local families and join in daily activities—providing a hands-on understanding of traditional rural living.

The villagers of Ban Na Ton Chan originally migrated from northern towns, including Muang Nua and Lap Lae, and they still speak a northern dialect. The village’s name comes from the abundance of ton chan trees (a type of native tree) once found in the area.

Most residents work as rice farmers and seasonal fruit growers. Many also engage in craft-based livelihoods, such as weaving, basketry, and creating wooden handicrafts from tree stumps. Life in the village is marked by a strong sense of community, kinship, and mutual support. It’s a peaceful, tightly-knit community that welcomes visitors with warmth and simplicity.
