The name "Mae Kampong" originates from the Kampong flower, a red-and-yellow blossom that grows abundantly along the riverbanks. Locals combined the flower's name with the river that runs through the village, hence the name "Ban Mae Kampong."

Most villagers make their living by producing miang (fermented tea leaves), farming, and growing coffee.
